In order to improve SEO, it is important to know what works and what doesn’t.

Factors that you can control on your site, including target keywords, content, and internal linking, are referred to as on-site SEO. With off-site SEO there are factors that are not as accessible. Mistakes that people make, that can be fixed with the right knowledge are as follows:

  • The use of animated flash menus is not recommended. Although it may look appealing, they can’t be seen by search engines.
  • Since web spiders are text-based browsers, it is not wise to incorporate text into images or Flash.
  • The use of Ajax is not permitted. Not only can it not be indexed by search engines, but the URL can’t be reloaded, which can be a major concern.
  • Make sure to have a unique title tag for every page on a site. Otherwise, having similar titles makes it seems as if every page has the same content.
  • It is not a wise decision to try and stuff the title with keywords. This is shunned, because it can be considered spam.

Do’s and Don’ts

  • Refrain from ignoring your audience. Make sure to keep in mind who your target audience is; and make your goal sparking their interest.
  • Don’t load your page with identical keywords.
  • Don’t avoid internal linking. Instead, make sure that there are links to all of the pages in your site, so that you can help the search engine to find all of your pages.
  • Don’t avoid broken links. Instead, it is better that fix them to prevent spiders and crawlers from indexing them.
  • Don’t be irregular with your URL. If you choose to use “www,” then that is the way that you should always do it.
  • Set up your site so that it is SEO friendly.
